The article aims at identifying linguistic means that form stylistic peculiarities of a scientific journal. Research material is the expedition journal of German naturalist D.G. Messerschmidt, sent to study Siberia by Peter the Great. Messerschmidt’s journals for 1721–1727 are all available, but the material is limited to the records for 1721, and other periods are used for comparison, since the language remains without significant changes. The study is relevant to the current interest to Messerschmidt’s expedition, due to its 300th anniversary, as well as the 300th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The studies on Messerschmidt ignore language of his journals. Novelty of the study is stylistic analysis of Messerschmidt’s journal, which can facilitate its translation, and is of interest in terms of development of language style of scientific texts. In the article, the scientific journal is regarded as a special type of text within the genre of travelogue, which is a research object of various branches. In the material under research, author’s impressions are few (although they are mentioned from time to time), but there is scientific description of what has been seen and analyzed. Consequently, the scientific journal has a greater degree of objectivity than other types of travelogue, and this determines lexical means. They follow certain general principles though a colleague of Messerschmidt, P.J. von Strahlenberg wrote most part of records. The present article investigates the means of creating objectivity (use of pluralis modestiae, German and borrowed terminology, constructions conveying other people’s speech), as well as the structure of Messerschmidt’s records.
