The topic of this article is musical terms in the 18th century translation dictionaries and ways of their translation. Modern researchers have a steady interest in musical terminology and its functioning in texts, as well as in the formation of the musical terminosystem in the Russian language, which is a complex process up to the middle of the 19th century. Before the first printed dictionaries the scope of musical vocabulary was very limited. The analysis of musical terminology in the dictionaries of the 18th century allows us to conclude that at the end of the period musical terminology is already a relatively independent group of terms and begins to find its application in special literature. Dictionaries of the 18th century, in particular translated dictionaries, dictionaries of foreign words and multilingual dictionaries, record musical terms, which, however, are presented in different variants. In translated eighteenth-century texts related to music, translations of musical terms also do not always coincide with each other, and many concepts are represented by doublets and phonetic variants. On the material of translated dictionaries of the 18th century the emerging tradition of translating musical terms is investigated. It is suggested that the translators of the Imperial Academy of Sciences, who prepared the basic translation dictionaries of the 18th century, began to use a special system of presenting terms, including musical terms. This system was willingly used by the translators of music-related texts (compare with Georg Simon Löhleins “Clavier-Schule”).
