NOMINATION VARIATION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF GERMAN RAILWAYS LANGUAGE
Abstract
The article analyzes variation in use of endogenous and exogenous lexemes in texts of the German Railways (DB). Since the beginning of railway construction in Germany, endogenous terms had been widely used for its description which is proved by various lexicons (1858, 1862, 1883, 1903). Even penetration of English lexemes after WWII did not influence the lexicon of DB.
The event, which opened the track for English words into German railway texts, was World Football Cup 2006 in Germany. For facilitation of transportation English was used at the railways within Germany. Since 2006 a number of lexemes has been in use in German.
The article bases on the DB website (www.bahn.de) and provides examples of exogenous lexemes in railway texts. The analysis conducted by the authors highlights the functions of the exogenous lexemes and explains causes for using them notwithstanding a new policy of DB targeting to replace English lexemes with their German synonyms.
