ADDRESS AS AN ORGANISING ELEMENT IN EPISTOLARY DISCOURSE
Abstract
This paper analyses the forms and functions of address in epistolary discourse of the Early New German period as exemplified by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz’s correspondence dating from 1702.
Therein, address would appear in the opening part of a letter as well in its closure known as Courtoisie. By comparing Leibniz’s German letters with those written in other European languages, the author concludes that German forms of address tend to be more extensive. They would usually include a whole list of titles accompanied by appropriate expressions of respect following strict rules of epistolary narrative. Since the epistolary discourse is ritualised and addressed and the principal functions of address are considered to be those of direction and labelling, it is therefore concluded that address had an organising role to play in the Early New German epistolary discourse.
