Abstract

The notion of narrative discourse is based on two major underlying premises: eventivity of the referent and discursive form of its representation. The eventive discourse production is governed by a narrative strategy targeted primarily at sequential textualization of episodes — structural elements of referential situation. The article analyzes the conceptual level of narrative production which is a referent of the macro-text and its episodes. Special attention is paid to the eventive and discursive types of information that together create a referential situation. A part of the article is devoted to the distribution of eventive information in the text and identification of textual episodes. Using a fragment of Thomas Mann’s text the second part of the article demonstrates how different approaches to structuring eventive information determine the functional aspect of narrative discourse. The theoretical framework of the present study is formed by the mutually complementary principles of the text linguistics and literature studies.
